The guide

Six chapters, read once from top to bottom. Start with why sounds come first, finish at the checkpoint.

  1. Short vowelsFive vowels that only ever live in a closed syllable.
  2. The One RuleOpen syllable, long vowel. Closed syllable, short vowel. This unlocks all Dutch spelling.
  3. Long vowelsSeven steady vowels. Three of them have no English equivalent.
  4. DiphthongsThree gliding vowels, one of them famous for being hard.
  5. The schwaThe lazy "uh" that eats every unstressed e.
  6. ConsonantsMost are free. These eleven are not.
